Mantua, Utah
May 22, 2022
BFF Fly Fishers were treated to a great day of weather and fishing at Mantua Reservoir near Logan, Utah on May 22. Six club members and two family members attended the outing to fish for large-mouth bass and blue gill from pontoon boats and float tubes.
Show time was eight o’clock. The morning weather was spectacularly beautiful. After lunch, the wind did pickup, and it treated us to some mild chop with the occasional white cap. But it died down and skies cleared for a very nice afternoon.
Everyone caught fish. Jayne led the way on total fish; growing up in Mississippi has the occasional advantage! Both bass and bluegill were of moderate size with the exception of one large bluegill caught by Heather, Sean’s wife. Bass were from 10 to 15 inches and put up a good fight. Bass liked subsurface takes on a smaller variety of flies that were cast to the base of trees with a slow the drop. Various combinations of black got the greatest amount of success.
Jim Banas was in the hot seat for trip leader with Jayne keeping him in line. All attendees expressed satisfaction with the trip and are planning to return before the reservoir weeds over for the summer.
Many thanks to Jim for his numerous attempts to scout this trip in the inconsistent Spring weather, figuring it all out, and for planning a great trip for us.
