Electro Fishing

the UDWR electrofishing volunteer opportunity on the Middle Provo River next week. Flows are down, and the sampling is a go. Thanks so much to many of you who have already signed up to help!

We are a little short on volunteers Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd so if you, your staff or anyone you know that may be interested please forward this email on and sign up on the links below. There may be some confusion on the signup- customer ID# (it's on your fishing license) or if you don't have one just sign up as a new customer) this is the new way of signing the paper volunteer forms we have signed in the past.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Oct. 21st, 22nd and 23rd UDWR will be electrofishing three sites on the Middle Provo River (Legacy Bridge on UT-113, 2400 North and Cottonwood/White Bridge below Jordanelle Dam) and I would like to invite anyone interested in helping and seeing how the fishery is doing to join us for the fun/work.

Here are three links, one for each day to sign up and help. Please click on the link/links that work for you. This will help assure we have sufficient coverage to get the work done each day. Again, no one will be turned away. This sign up is to help give credit and tra\ck hours and again help make sure we don't have 50 people one day and 2 the next. Please try and fill empty slots first but if the slots you want are full or there is only one particular day you can make it please come and join us anyway.

Details:

Mon. Oct. 21st we will begin by sampling just below the Legacy Bridge Parking Lot just off St Road 113 in Midway at 9:30am. We'll meet there in the parking lot, get our waders on, have a little orientation and then walk down the footpath to our starting location. We anticipate the sampling effort including measuring and weighing the fish will last until approximately 3:30pm.

Tues. Oct. 22nd we will begin sampling at the 2400 N. site at 9:30am. The best place to park today will be as far west as you can drive on 2400 N. in Heber. We will get our waders on right here and gather for an orientation and begin our sampling right here. We anticipate the sampling effort including measuring and weighing the fish will last until approximately 3:30pm.

Wed. Oct. 23rd we will begin sampling at the Cottonwood/White Bridge which crosses the Provo River about 1 mile below Jordanelle dam at 9:30am (this is a large developed parking area designated for angling/recreational use). We will get our waders on and all walk across the bridge and then downstream a couple hundred yards where we will gather for an orientation and begin our survey. We anticipate the sampling effort including measuring and weighing the fish will last until approximately 3:30pm.

There is a slight chance that higher irrigation/management flows may continue past Oct. 15th if the 90's continue and no moisture comes. If this is the case we would have to cancel or postpone our sampling. I will contact everyone on this group email if that happens. Let's just hope fall comes and water managers can work through some requirements needed at Deer Creek Dam...

FYI, sampling will consist of wading in the river for 500-600 ft at each site in your chest waders making 2 passes in that section of river catching/netting fish following the electrofishing equipment (see photo below). We will be collecting all fish and holding them in live wells until each pass of sampling is complete at the site. We will then divide into groups and the fish will then be weighed, measured and released back into the river completing the work for the day. I will have plenty of water and snacks for everyone but please bring lunch if you'd like more.

I anticipate needing ~20 to 25 people each day to get the work done effectively so we'd love to have many of you with us. I also see this as a great partnership effort in working together to understand the fishery we get to enjoy in the Provo River. I'm sure I have not included all guides, anglers, agencies and partners... who may be interested in this work, so those of you who are the lead of organizations, know others, or have others in your organizations who may be interested in participating please forward this invitation/email on to them. Thanks!

Again, as part of this sampling I am not going to turn anyone away, this is open to all. I think this will give us all a good picture of what is in the river and I'd love to rub shoulders and chat with you as we work on the Provo together. Please keep in mind sampling this time of year may be cold so please bring your chest waders and dress for the conditions, it can be cold and will be tough walking up the current netting fish and Thank you! Thank you! for your interest and partnership in this great fishery!!

Thanks, Mike 801-367-5941 cell
