Pyramid Lake – March 2024 overnight

A few of us took the long trek with our trailers to Sutcliff Nevada, on the windy shores of Pyramid Lake, to try our hand at catching a huge Lahontan cutthroat.

Fishing was tuff and few were catching fish on this fourth weekend of March. We braved the wind, rain and cold on our rented ladders to make the most of the trip. All of us felt the tug of a Lahontan over the Friday\Saturday weekend, but not all of us managed to put a fish in the net. This appeared to be the case with the others we spoke to and observed fishing in boats.

White popcorn beetles seemed to be a favorite of those fish that lipped our line. We kept up the camaraderie by fishing together, comparing techniques and flies, and sharing dinner.

While Sean and Heather returned their camper to the warmth of St. George on Sunday, Thom and I tried our luck on the Truckee River a number of miles upriver from where it dumps into Pyramid. We managed to get a few rainbows to the net just beyond the front yard of the (in-) famous Mustang Ranch.
