BFF member Dave Whiteman will be the speaker at the November 20 meeting. He will present the results of his recently completed 2-yr Middle Provo River conservation project. This collaborative project between the High Country Fly Fishing club and students at Wasatch High School in Heber City monitored water temperatures and macro-invertebrates in the Middle Provo River and provided important information on the health of the fishery.
Several outcomes of the project now accessible on the HCFF.net webpage include a report introducing the Middle Provo River to fishermen, a video of stream macro-invertebrates, a low-altitude flyby video showing the river’s course from the Jordanelle to Deer Creek reservoirs and a report on the temporal and spatial variation of Middle Provo River water temperatures.
The first of these outcome reports provides a history of the river and its geography, geology, meteorology, and fishing infrastructure. While the productive and popular Blue-Ribbon fishery is presently healthy, the lower part of the river is experiencing some water quality issues. Possible future concerns for the fishery include the rapid urbanization of the Heber Valley, the effects of global warming, potential invasive species, and over-utilization of the fishery. The talk will summarize the information from the written reports and videos on the HCFF webpage.
Dave Whiteman has been an active member of HCFF for many years and joined the Bonneville Fly Fishers club several years ago. He is an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer. He retired 5 years ago from the University of Utah’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences as an Emeritus Research Professor specializing in mountain meteorology and air quality. His retirement activities include frequent fishing trips to Western U.S. waters.
