We will be fishing Minersville Reservoir just outside of Beaver, Utah with the option of fishing Beaver River above the town of Beaver in the Tushar Mountains. Otter Creek and Kingston Canyon are another nearby option if Minersville is a bust. This is a joint trip together with High Country Fly Fishers in Park City.
This trip is an overnight outing. I often fish Minersville as a day trip because it’s an easy drive from SLC.
As always with early Spring trips, the weather is the determining factor in whether the trip actually happens as planned. Please be flexible.
Target Species: Rainbow, cutthroat, brown, smallmouth and wipers. Cuts and rainbows are large, typically between 17” to 23”.
Drive time: 3.6 hrs. from downtown SLC, 3 hrs. from SLC airport.
Level of fishing difficulty: If we figure out what the fish are eating, it is easy and way fun. Five or 6 wt. rod may be best. Float tube is optional, but leader is fishing from bank.
Access: Paved and dirt roads. The State Park has flush bathrooms that should be open this time of year. The entrance fee is $10/day. Annual passes are also available for purchase before you get to the park, which is probably not staffed this time of year.
Accommodations: There are campgrounds in Beaver and at the reservoir. The campground at the reservoir also has extremely rustic cabins (a.k.a. sheds without heat or running water) available for rent. There are a number of motels and eating establishments and a couple small grocery stores in town.
Weather: Cool to cold with possible winds. Reservoir is exposed.
Terrian: Normal public access with local boat ramps and generally gentle to moderately steep banks.
Wading: Relatively easy with sandy to silty bottom. Good access from paved parking lot with bathrooms and camping.
