Oneida Narrows (Bear River)

Leader is Lynn Vars

We will be fishing the Bear River below the Oneida Narrows dam.  This is a beautifully scenic spot with a chance to catch a trout or smallmouth bass and even bath in a local hot spring.  Those willing to camp riverside could make this an overnight trip.

4 things for successful fly fishing;

1.) keep your fly in the water

2.) believe in every cast

3.) don't leave fish to find fish

4.) deserve has nothing to do with it.

Target Species: Rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass, walleye immediately below the dam.

Drive time: 2.5 hrs., 133 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderate.  Four or 5 wt 9' rod works well.  Nymphs and drys have worked well in the past, with streamers getting eats from smallmouth.

Access: Well maintained dirt road along the river to the dam and beyond.  Lots of parking pullouts and campgrounds along the river.

Accommodations:  See links below;

 Redpoint BLM campground below the dam 13 sites (first come first serve).   https://www.blm.gov/visit/redpoint-campground

 Maple Grove Campground north on reservoir above the dam                                   12 sites (first come - first  serve) https://www.blm.gov/visit/maple-grove-campground

There also amenities in Preston which is 17 miles away from the dam and on the way from SLC.

Weather: 4,850'. Typical cool spring weather with areas shaded and potentially icy in early spring.

Terrian: Normal public access with moderate to steep banks.

Wading difficulty: Moderately difficult. Rock can be rounded and slippery.  Wading stick very helpful.  South banks can be steep, north bank more gentle with easier access.  Note that the dam flows can change rapidly, hopefully following a horn from the dam.

License:  You can buy your Idaho Fishing Licenses online or in Preston at South Fork Hardware, 64 N. State St, Preston ID 83263 208-852-1221 and also Welcome Mart in Preston.
