East Canyon – May 2024

A nearby yet often overlooked fishery for us, East Canyon proved to be a challenge. Not only the winds that piped up, but the lack of fish activity. Lots of boats on the lake and none seemed to be filling a net.

Had  6 attending Anita,  Carol  ,Lynn , Rafael, Robert, and myself. 

We were fishing from float tubes and kayaks. Robert and Lynn were fishing from shore. Water was a little cloudy.

Started out at Big Rock campground.  Stayed till lunch, then drove to Lost Creek reservoir due to windy conditions at East Canyon, and no fish close to Croydon.

Our group fished from shore and floaty things. Throwing the arsenal at them garnered only a few hits and nothing landed. Well, Carol and Anita seems to have figured out the trick and landed a few from the bank on the west side.

Launching from the eastern campground is a bit of a challenge unless you have a float tube. Kayaks and pontoon craft are a struggle. There's a boat ramp in the north campground.

With the opportunity to catch trout, bass and other species, I think we'll be back to fight another day.

At Lost Creek, Rafael and myself caught a couple rainbows. Anita and Carrol joined us later and they had caught a brown and wiper at east canyon.

Note: We were all surprised by the increase in day-use fees at this state park. Now $25/day!!! Just be for-warned. There is a discount (conveniently not listed on the fee board, for vets and over 65. It's $15)  And there's no cell service by any carrier unless you drive to up the dam area. So using the scan-n-pay is kinda useless. Yearly passes for state parks are now $125. Half that if you are over 65. Much less if you are a disabled vet or have certain medical conditions.
