    Fly Tying with Friends

Come join us at the Whitmore Library, 2197 Fort Union Blvd., Cottonwood Heights. We typically meet downstairs in one of the meeting rooms. Easy to find.

Bring your tying stuff, or come and watch, swap stories, and learn a thing or two.

This is not a tying class. More like tying fun things with fellow tiers. But if you are new to tying, this is a good place to get great info about getting started. More experience in the room than the law allows.... if there is such a law.

    Minersville Res. and Beaver River

    Leader is Kim Schroeder

We will be fishing Minersville Reservoir just a short drive west of Beaver, Utah and/or the Beaver River.

Target Species: Rainbow and brown trout.

Drive time: 3 hrs., 209 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderate to easy.  4 wt.  8.5' or 9' rod works well for the river, as do Tenkara rods.  Five or 6 wt. rods are better for the reservoir and for throwing streamers and other heavy rigs.  In the river last year nymphs and small dries worked.  Suspect balanced leaches and chironomid patterns to work in reservoir, together with streamer leaches.

Access: Paved road to most access points, with small amount of dirt road to access riverbank and reservoir in some areas.  Lots of pull-outs and parking spots along both the river and the reservoir.

Accommodations:  Lots of motels in Beaver which are very close to accessing both the reservoir and the river.  There are also a number of campgrounds in and around Beaver.  Most, if not all, campgrounds in the mountains along the Beaver River and lakes west of Beaver will not be open yet.

Weather: 5,900'. The town of Beaver is relatively high, so expect cooler temperatures than SLC, especially if fishing the Beaver River west of town.

Terrian: Normal public access along river and reservoir.

Wading difficulty: Easy in reservoir but locally muddy bottom especially near the main campground on the southeast end of the reservoir.  Wading is relatively easy along the Beaver River, though silty banks and river bottom is common, together with local brushy spots and fallen timber.  May be snowing along banks of river in the canyon.

License:  Utah Fishing license is all that is required.

    Oneida Narrows (Bear River)

    Leader is Lynn Vars

We will be fishing the Bear River below the Oneida Narrows dam.  This is a beautifully scenic spot with a chance to catch a trout or smallmouth bass and even bath in a local hot spring.  Those willing to camp riverside could make this an overnight trip.

    4 things for successful fly fishing;

1.) keep your fly in the water

    2.) believe in every cast

3.) don't leave fish to find fish

4.) deserve has nothing to do with it.

          Clint Eastwood

Target Species: Rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass, walleye immediately below the dam.

Drive time: 2.5 hrs., 133 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderate.  Four or 5 wt 9' rod works well.  Nymphs and drys have worked well in the past, with streamers getting eats from smallmouth.

Access: Well maintained dirt road along the river to the dam and beyond.  Lots of parking pullouts and campgrounds along the river.

    Accommodations:  See links below;

Redpoint BLM campground below the dam 13 sites (first come first serve).   https://www.blm.gov/visit/redpoint-campground

Maple Grove Campground north on reservoir above the dam                                   12 sites (first come - first  serve) https://www.blm.gov/visit/maple-grove-campground

There also amenities in Preston which is 17 miles away from the dam and on the way from SLC.

Weather: 4,850'. Typical cool spring weather with areas shaded and potentially icy in early spring.

Terrian: Normal public access with moderate to steep banks.

Wading difficulty: Moderately difficult. Rock can be rounded and slippery.  Wading stick very helpful.  South banks can be steep, north bank more gentle with easier access.  Note that the dam flows can change rapidly, hopefully following a horn from the dam.

License:  You can buy your Idaho Fishing Licenses online or in Preston at South Fork Hardware, 64 N. State St, Preston ID 83263 208-852-1221 and also Welcome Mart in Preston.

    Strawberry ice-off

The Strawberry Reservoir Day Trip in April will be held sometime between April 8th and April 22nd. This is so we can scout the reservoir to find the exact moment to be out there when the ice has pulled back from the bank about 15’. Once the ice starts pulling back, we have about a 3-to-4-day window to get out there for optimal ice conditions. This is, of course, dependent on Strawberry actually icing over this year. If it doesn’t … well, this trip will be a bust. ☹

Target Species: Cutthroat and rainbow trout.

Drive time: 1.25 hrs., 65 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderate. Goal is to catch cutthroat trout in the 18-25" range on dry flies, though other methods are welcome and might work as well or better depending on the mood of the fish!.   9' 7 wt. fast action rod may be best, but other weights work as well.  The wind always blows at Strawberry.  It's not a question of if, it's more a question of when.  If you do choose a heavier rod, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much easier it is to cast in the wind.  Especially with a big or weighty rig at the end of the line.

Use a large opening long handled rubber measure net.

Slot limits are posted:  2 cutthroats under 16" and 1 cutt over 22".  Check regs if you want to catch/kill.

Access: Some areas are accessible by two-wheel drive (e.g. Strawberry Marina).  Many of the access areas involve driving on dirt roads and dirt parking lots.  All-wheel or four-wheel drive are helpful to access some areas and\or if dirt portions of roads are muddy. Lots of parking along pullouts and campgrounds on the reservoir. A map of the lake would be helpful.  Maps of several of our local lakes are available online and at the local fly shops and Sportsman's Warehouse  www.fishnmap.comCell phone coverage is better than it used to be but there are still places where cell phones don't work.  It for sure works at the USFS Visitor Center. Parking passes are required (a Utah State Parks Pass will not work). A National Parks Pass (America the Beautiful pass) displayed on the vehicle dash will work.  If you do not have one, a day pass can be purchased at the Marina. They patrol the parking lots on a very regular basis.  Be sure you have a current Utah fishing license and can access it.

Weather: Strawberry is a high elevation reservoir with significantly cooler weather than SLC.   Please dress warmly and plan for windy weather.

Terrian: Normal public access with some limited hiking.  Wading is moderate with locally muddy and silty bottom and wet\muddy shoreline.  Rocky areas and steep banks in some of the areas.

Wading difficulty: Moderately easy. Waders are highly recommended as you will be standing in ice water.  Most wear long johns, wool socks, hats, warm gloves, rain jacket, fleece, etc.  Dress to keep yourself comfortable per the weather forecast.

License:  Utah fishing license. A park pass required in most areas.

    Hams Fork river

    Leader is Jim Banas

We will be fishing the Hams Fork river below Via Naughten reservoir.  This is a wade trip.

Target Species: Rainbow, lesser tiger trout.

Drive time: 2.25 hrs., 140 miles.  Link here: Lake Viva Naughton Dam - Google Maps

Level of fishing difficulty: Relatively easy fishing including wading in water just off the bank.

Access: Paved road with the last 0.5 mile good dirt road. There is a private section we will be fishing that requires a small fee ($10?) of cash deposited into a box on one of the fishing sites.

Accommodations: There are a number of motels in Kemmerer and Diamondville, 20 minutes (15 miles) from the river.  There is primitive and dispersed camping on Lake Viva Naughton and private campgrounds in Kemmerer.

Weather:  7,100' elevation. Likely to be considerably cooler than SLC.

Terrian: Normal public access with walk and wade to access river.

Wading difficulty: Easy, but banks tend to be very silty with holes and ruts in the bank -be careful hiking the banks!  Stream bottom is generally fine gravel and cobbles, but silty areas are common.

Otter Creek, Panguich, Upper and Lower Box Canyon creek

    Leader is Sean Dillon

We will be fishing Otter Creek reservoir with the option to fish Otter, Upper and Lower Box creeks.  Float tube boat may be helpful but not required.

Otter Creek Reservoir is Utah's premier rainbow trout fishery (DNR website).  It is one of the most productive lakes with stocked rainbow gaining over an inch of growth a month at times. The average rainbow trout harvested measures 16" and weighs two pounds!  The rainbow trout population is typically dominated by two size classes. 1) fish stocked during the previous fall which may measure from 8 to 14 inches.  2) "Older" trout that have been in the reservoir more than a year and may measure from 16 to 20 inches.  There are plenty of fish that surpass 20 inches that are characterized by weight instead of length!

    Google Map Link

Target Species: Rainbow with lesser cutthroat and brown trout.  The latter migrate in from connected waterways.  Smallmouth and wipers also present but more typical in the warmer months.

Drive time: 3.2 hrs., 210 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderate.  Waders very helpful to reach deeper water and high bank areas but not absolutely necessary.  Nine foot and longer 6 wt. rods with floating line are helpful to cut the wind and get the fly out into the water.  Sinking lines can be helpful to get a streamer down in the water column.  Warm gear is essential, as this is elevated terrain and an area where winds are common.

Access: Paved and dirt roads.  Four-wheel drive not required.

Accommodations: Otter Creek State Park has RV hook-up campsites and 2 cabins for rent, 21 camp sites with water/electric hook ups and showers.  The State Park has first come/ first serve this time of year. Otter Creek RV Park and Marina may also be available if open at the date selected for this trip (both located on the south end of the lake).  Fisherman Beach Campground (BLM managed) has tent sites and pit toilets.  Some Airbnb in Antimony – used by members in the past.

Weather:  Park elevation is 6,350'.  Cool to cold with possible strong winds.

Terrain: Normal public access with local boat ramps and moderate to steep banks.  Cell service is not good in the area.  It may be helpful to bring walkie talkies.

Wading difficulty:  Easy to moderate.  Sandy to silty bottom.  There are options to fish from shore.  Float tube boat not required but can be useful.

    Boulder Mountains

    Host is Fred Jepsen

This is a camping trip where we will be fishing ponds and lakes near the Jepsen Ranch.  Some locations can be fished from the bank, some best by kick boat.

Target Species: Rainbow, browns, cutts and tiger trout.

Drive time: 4 hrs., 247 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Easy to moderate.  Some ponds are easier than others. Four or 5 wt rods with floating and sinking lines work well.  Perhaps a six weight rod with sink tip in the larger lakes.  We fish Posey lake, where damsel flies are prevalent.  Both drys, wet flies and leaches work well in nearby reservoirs.

Access: Mostly dirt roads, some locations, if chosen, could require higher clearance vehicles.  A 4x4 required to some areas but not all. We often pool into 4x4 vehicles for those that do not have high clearance vehicles.  Some locations may have steep grades and steep drop-offs.

Accommodations: Camper parking spots are available on Fred's pasture and limited beds in Fred's house.  If you are a tent camper, there are two bathrooms available in the house also. The pasture has power and water available. There is a new campground nearby with hook-ups(?).  Motels are available in either Wayne County or Escalante.

Weather:  >8,000'. Cool nights and warm days.

Terrian: Lakes and ponds, some with shore access not requiring wading, others may be brush or weed lined and best accessed by kick boat.

Wading difficulty: Easy in some areas and do not require waders, moderate in others.

Huntington, Cleveland and Electric reservoirs and streams

    Leader is Jim Banas

We will be fishing these reservoirs and associated streams (these include the Left and Right Forks of Huntington Creek).  Float tubes will help to access more of the reservoirs.  This is a high elevation area where we can escape some of SLC valley heat.

Target Species: Tiger, rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout.  Tiger trout are prevalent in Huntington (it also includes Splake), while tIger, cutthroat and kokanee are present in Electric Lake.  Brown trout are common in the streams.

Drive time: 2 hrs., 110 miles. Link to location here: Huntington Reservoir - Google Maps

Accommodations:  Huntington State Park Campground and other local camping areas.

Level of fishing difficulty: Easy access and easy to moderate skill required. Sinking lines are very helpful for the reservoirs.

Access: Paved and dirt roads.  Two-wheel drive to access reservoirs but all-wheel or four-wheel drive helpful. Good campgrounds and boat ramps.

Weather:  8,500'-9,600' elevation. This trip will be cooler than the SLC valley, especially in the morning.

Terrian: Short walks to reservoirs and local boat ramps and local rocky dams and streams.

Wading difficulty: Easy, can fish from shore.  Moderate access in streams.

    Mirror Highway lakes

    Leader is Brian Sheets

Closer to the event, we will decide which lake(s) to fish.  Options include Lost Lake Reservoir, Lily Lake and Teapot Lake.

Target Species: Rainbow, brook, and tiger trout

Drive time:  Depending on the lake, 1.75  hrs., 70 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Easy to Moderate.  Hungry fish, often on dry flies.  Usually, this time of the summer dry flies will work including beetles, ants, renegades and maybe hoppers but it could be a little early for them.  Also, a dry fly attractor with a dropper may also work.  I will give a better breakdown about a week before the trip.

Access:  Via the paved Mirror Lake Highway with dirt parking lots.  Four by four or high clearance vehicles not required.

Weather:  Cool mornings with warm comfortable days.  Bring rain gear.  The Unitas are known for afternoon rain storms but they are usually short in duration.

Terrian: Bank fishing favorable, chest or hip waders and kick boats provide additional access at all three lakes.

Wading difficulty: Easy, waders not required.

Yellowstone overnight   -Sorry, we have met capacity for this event.

We are pleased to announce that we will again be presenting our members with an opportunity for a multi-night stay to fish from West Yellowstone, MT this fall, October 14-18/19.

Register here asap.  This is first-come-first-served trip with limited spaces available (up to 14, depending on bedroom and bathroom availability).

A $200 deposit will be required once the attendance list is completed.

    DETAILS:
We will be staying at our usual eight-bedroom, five bath cabin.  This location provides direct access to fish in beautiful Yellowstone Park, the US’s first, and surrounding areas. Rivers include the easily 'wadable' Firehole, noted as a wonderful rainbow fishery, Gibbon, Lamar and the famed Madison inside and outside the Park.

This is the time of year to catch large ‘runner’ brown and rainbow trout traveling upstream from Hebgen Lake for the spawn.  Indigenous whitefish, cutthroat and rainbow-cutthroat hybrid are also present. This is a well-known ‘destination’ for fly fisherpersons (that's us), from all parts of the US at a time\opportunity to take large, normally lake-feeding trout in moving water.

All types of fly-fishing methods are available.  This includes dry fly fishing, especially as hot springs warm portions of rivers like the Firehole.  Also at this time and given that West Yellowstone is at 6,670’ elevation, it can be quite cold and already include snowfall and sub-freezing weather.

    Please come prepared:

    - Bear spray is strongly recommended.

    - A Yellowstone fishing license,

    - barbless single hooks and

    - non-lead split shot are required inside the Park.

Securing of accommodations and all food including food to pack for lunches and snacks will be organized and provided by your host, Kim Schroeder (except for dinner on the first day). Attendees will share in the cooking and clean up, as assigned by the host, and to be shared equally among the group.

Attendance will be accepted on a first-in basis and within the limitations of the accommodations, as there are a fixed number of couple and single person room and bathroom options.

After sign-up, those on the reservation list will be required to submit a non-refundable deposit of $200/person, payable by a variety of methods directly to Kim Schroeder.  A non-refundable deposit of $1,600 has already been paid to secure the cabin for the Membership.

The balance of the cabin rental and food will be due approximately 60 days before the first day of the trip.  Last year’s total cost for food was a little under $100/person and a total cost of $404/person.

    Hope to see you there!

    Dorado Fishing in Argentina

BFF Club Members - We are excited to present an international opportunity to fish Argentina!  This is a week-long trip to fish for Golden Dorado at our choice of two exclusive lodges in Argentina’s Corrientes Province through Set Fly Fishing.  SET has three very different Dorado fisheries, and their program lets us combine any two in one flexible, week-long adventure.

We’ll explore two contrasting environments—each with its own vibe, water type, and Dorado profile—while enjoying seamless transitions, professional guiding, and comfortable lodges.

Through the BFF club and SET, trip attendees get a $1000 discount off the $7000 trip cost plus, with eight individuals, we get an additional discount.  The second discount is the cost of the eighth person divided amount the 8 participants.  It would be hard to get a better deal!

Details and a link to Set’s informative web page are below.  It has been suggested that we select the Jetu'u Lodge, with plenty of action at the Ysoro Marsh and the Middle Paraná River”, and the Itali Lodge with “Big river, big structure, big Dorado”.  Final lodge selections will ultimately be up to group.  Dates are limited, but as of this posting, November 28 through December 5th 2026 are available, but we need to book asap. October through December are peak months for Dorado fishing.

Let me (Kim Schroeder) know if you have any questions.

I hope to see you there!
